The Cadet Nationals
7th December 2013
On Saturday 7th December, two local boys, Jacob Aldridge (fighting for Newbury Judo Club) and Oliver Harris (fighting for Osaka JC) travelled to Sheffield for the British Championships. Both were competing in the Cadet Section, with this being Jacob's first year and Oliver's second at this age group. Jacob Aldridge (Newbury) was competing in the U55kg section and had 25 in his weight. He won his first fight with a hold down and his next he dispatched his opponent with an Ippon, He got thrown in his quarter final fight which dropped him into the Repecharge. There he went about throwing his next opponent into a hold and securing a win, before fighting the same boy from his first fight. This time he dispatched the boy for Ippon moving him into the Bronze medal fight. This Jacob fought tactically after scoring a Wazari, he then kept the boy out until the end of the contest to take the Bronze medal.
Oliver Harris (Osaka) was competing in the U60kg section and had 36 in his weight. He had a bye in the first round and then in his next fight threw his opponent for Ippon, he then quickly did the same to his next opponent to put him in the quarter final, here he lost to the reigning Champion to drop him into the Repecharge. He threw his next opponent for a Yuko and won after the boy was disqualified for getting 4 passivity penalties. His next fight he started well but was strangled to leave him in 7th place.
Both boys fought extremely well in hard groups and with Jacob winning a medal, this has meant Newbury Judo Club have Medalled in each of the last 3 years at the British Championships. A fantastic achievement for the club and this should put Jacob in the England Cadet Squad for next year.

BOG Tournament Geleen Holland
U18 - Oliver Harris - Bronze Oliver had a bye in the first round before winning his next fight by a strangle. He went into the semi final and won on a yuko. The final went to golden score and after 7 minutes a mistake by Olie gave his opponent a yuko. Due to how comps are in Holland he then had to fight the bronze medalist to see who would get silver. Again the fight went into golden score and a tired attack from Olie resulted in the boy just pushing him over for a yuko. So he came away with a bronze! |
