Coach
Trevor Fisher
Level 2
Started judo aged 6 at Newbury judo club, and starting competing at 8 years old, training to high standards and a regular member of the northern Home Counties squad competing at many national championships, also helping out as a assistant coach on the under 8's class, at the age of 19 I was signed of all judo training by doctors after 6 weeks in hospital following a serious motor accident, returning to judo about 3 years later, I started competing again, winning many more medals and proudly gained my Dan grade by winning a 3 man line-up. Following many injuries including shoulder, back & knees I retired from competing and focused on coaching, gaining my level 2 coaching certificate.
Trevor made a brief comeback in 2015 and took
Bronze in the British Master Championships.

Newbury Judo 40th Celebrations 2017
Newbury Judo Club held its 40 years since the opening of its Dojo on Saturday 6th May'17
There was a good turn out of old and new.
Jean and Tony talked us through some of the history of the club. Jean herself played an important part in securing the land form the council without her persistence it would never have happened.
Tony our chairman spoke about the efforts by the then members that built the Dojo some of whom were present on the day.
Jean later became Head Coach until Nicki took over in 2010.
A demonstration by the clubs top Judoka, a free BBQ, drinks and raffle prizes helped the day go well.
The club intends to expand the Dojo over the coming years and so we begin a new round of fund raising.

The celebration of our Dojo
Newbury Judo Club will be holding a celebration of 40 years in their own purpose built Dojo, Poplar Place, Almond Avenue, Newbury.
The records show Newbury Judo Club started back to the 1940’s but it was some years later that Jean Beagley, the then head Coach staged a sit in at Newbury District Council until an agreement was reached and a plot of land allocated for the parents to build their own Dojo.
The Newbury coaches all give their time on a voluntary basis including coaching the players at competitions at weekends which means giving up a lot of family time but they are a dedicated crew.
This dedication has led to two of the coaches becoming British Masters (veterans) Gold medallists with a third securing a bronze & one of our coaches becoming a Masters World Champion following her previous success as British National Champion in her teens.
Over the last few years the Club has had multiple medalists at the British National Championships and in 2015 they had their first Male British National Champion at Cadet level. He then went on to become Newbury’s first European Cup medallist securing a Silver medal at the Spanish European Cup in 2016. Ranking him 14th in the world at that time. Hard work & dedication then earned him an all expenses paid training trip to Japan for 9 days with the GB Trademarks Squad. This led to him then qualifying for a part-time place at the GB Judo Academy another first for Newbury Judo Club.
We have had three players make selection for the European Cups, two of whom have also competed in the Sainsbury’s School Games with one of them securing a Bronze medal at this event.
This was then followed by the Clubs first female National Gold medallist in the Minors division and one of the squad making selection for the GB SN (Special Needs) Squad, again another Newbury first.
This year we have a new batch of Red belts starting to compete and they have been bringing home the medals in true Newbury fashion.
Our recent successes have been under Head Coach Nicki Harris who has been with the club since she was six years old. A British National Medallist herself and a GB squad member. Sadly injured out of Judo in her prime, Nicki has found her vocation coaching to a very high level. Her whole family participate in the running of the club, with her two boys also competing. Her eldest having competed at European Cup level

Dutch Espoir International Tournament in Eindhoven, Holland Jan 2015
On Sunday 11th Jan, Ben, Jacob and Olie competed in the Dutch Espoir International Tournament in Eindhoven Holland. Competing in very large groups, all 3 boys worked hard and gained great experience.
Ben had 51 competitors but was unable to get through the first round this time - next year Ben.
Jacob, competing for the 2nd year here, had 74 competitors. He won his first 2 contests before coming up against a strong Swiss boy, Jacob lost this but as the boy made it to the semi final he was pulled back into the repecharge. He won his first contest in the repecharge before losing out on a Yuko. 5 fights this year with 3 wins.
Olie, also competing for the second time, had 82 competitors, he won his first 3 contests but lost his 4th contest, his opponent won his next to put Olie into the repecharge. He won his next 2 contests before losing on a shido that would have put him in the bronze medal fight. So finishing 7th. 7 fights and 5 wins.
Well done to all 3

U18 - Oliver Harris - Bronze
Oliver had a bye in the first round before winning his next fight by a strangle. He went into the semi final and won on a yuko. The final went to golden score and after 7 minutes a mistake by Olie gave his opponent a yuko. Due to how comps are in Holland he then had to fight the bronze medalist to see who would get silver. Again the fight went into golden score and a tired attack from Olie resulted in the boy just pushing him over for a yuko. So he came away with a bronze!
